Representatives of the shipping/training community in India are cordially invited to a free of charge MRM information seminar on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at the auditorium of the Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. in Mumbai.
Maritime Resource Management (MRM) is a further development of the original Bridge Resource Management course that was launched in the shipping industry in the early 1990s. Together with the SAS Flight Academy and six other major maritime organisations, The Swedish Club converted a successful aviation training programme to a course tailored for the maritime industry. The objective with MRM training is to establish genuine safety cultures in shipping companies, onboard and ashore, with the ultimate aim of combating human errors in accidents at sea.
In the recent revision of the STCW Convention and Code, Bridge and Engine Room Resource Management have been made mandatory training requirements. Also added is the training in leadership, team working, and managerial skills. In the light of the above, the MRM programme has become all the more important and is today regarded as one of the premier courses in the maritime industry dealing with the human factor and error chains. There are currently 72 training establishments in 31 countries offering this course.
Seminar topics
The new STCW requirements deal with "assertiveness training" and "situation awareness". What this really means and how this can be trained, will be presented and discussed at the seminar.
Other topics addressed at the seminar are:
* Background to MRM
* Contributing factors in accidents
* The new view on human error
* Culture's impact on teamwork and errors from a national, professional and organizational perspective.
Target groups
The target groups for the meeting are top management representatives and those who are responsible for and deal with safety, recruitment and training issues of seafarers and work for training providers, manning agencies, ship owners, ship managers, maritime administrations or any other relevant organisation in the shipping industry.
